RedFriction: Thank you for taking the time for this interview.
Give us a run down of yourself as an artist.

Mui: I’m self-study illustrator, because I’m not graduated direct in ‘illustration’ field but I study math-science in secondary and enter faculty of architecture department of landscape architect, in faculty make me interesting in graphic and I decide to be and artist/illustrator when I’m about 3rd years in university, after graduate I apply job in game company, affiliate of Asiasoft corporation. I work as designer for 2 years for complete concept design for casual game, and it’s already launch. After that I was working for IFS in Singapore.

All of them are very talent artist and I get very good experience both life, and work. There after that I’ve some private problem so I’ve to go back to my hometown [Thailand]

Then and have to decide my life direction, firstly I think about ‘advertising’ field. I’m interesting in this field but after a lot of consideration and talk with family, That I didn’t want to working for only salary now, but I want more free time to do my own thing.

So I decide to working as freelance illustrator till now , so I can keep focus on develop my illustration and my own project in future.

มุ่ย:ตอนนี้ทำงานเป็นนักวาดภาพประกอบ ที่ผ่านมาศึกษาด้วยตัวเอง

เพราะไม่ได้จบวาดภาพประกอบตรง ตอนเรียนมัธยมเรียนวิทยาศาสตร์คณิตศาสตร์

ส่วนตอนมหาลัยเรียนสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ แต่มันเป็นจุดเริ่มที่ทำให้เราสนใจในด้านกราฟฟิค

ด้านวาดภาพ ดังนั้นพอจบมาเลยตัดสินใจไปทำงานบริษัทเกม ทำงานอยู่ 2 ปี

แล้วก็ไปทำงานที่สิงคโปร์ ที่ไอเอฟเอส คือทุกคนที่นี่เก่งมาก ทำให้เราได้ประสบการณ์ในการทำงาน

และประสบการณ์ชีวิตหลายอย่าง แล้วกลับไทยเนื่องจากมีปัญหาส่วนตัว

พอกลับไทยแล้ว ก็เลยตัดสินใจว่าจะเอายังไงกับชีวิต ตอนแรกสนใจศาสตร์ด้านโฆษณา

แต่ว่าพอลองคิดดูอีกทีกับปรึกษากับครอบครัวแล้ว

พบว่าเราไม่อยากทำงานเพื่อเงินเดือนอย่างเดียวณ.ตอนนี้

เราอยากมีเวลาที่จะทำอะไรของตัวเองมากขึ้น

(ไม่ได้บอกว่าคนที่ทำงานเงินเดือนไม่ดีนะ แต่มันเป็นทางเลือกของชีวิตเรา)

RF: Who or what influence you to create the kind of images we see?

M: So many . Most of them are people I admire style. I have to said I inspire from Thai art, manga, Chinese painting and western painting and combine thing I interesting together.I love delicate and smooth feel of oriental art, but I love mood and tone of western art.

เรดฟริกชัน:ใครหรืออะไรที่มีอิทธิพลกับสไตล์ของภาพที่เราเห็น

มุ่ย:มาจากหลายอย่างนะ ส่วนมากก็มาจากคนที่เราชอบงาน

แต่รวมๆคือ ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากศิลปะไทย การ์ตูนญี่ปุ่น ภาพเขียนจีน แล้วก็ภาพเขียนฝรั่ง

(จริงๆมีมากกว่านี้อีก…เช่น งานออกแบบกราฟฟิค งานสถาปัตยกรรม…ทุกอย่างนั่นแหละ…)

ชอบสไตล์ที่นุ่มนวลของทางตะวันออก แต่ชอบการสื่ออารมณ์ของภาพตะวันตก

RF: What tools do you use to create your beautiful images?

M: I love pencil, watercolor; actually I like traditional art but when working
I have to practice digital also. I want to try another medium at well, for digital I use Wacom intuos 2 6×8,photoshopCS sometimes painter.

เรดฟริกชัน:คุณใช้เครื่องมืออะไรในการสร้างสรรค์ภาพ?

มุ่ย:ชอบดินสอกับสีน้ำ จริงๆชอบภาพวาดมือมากกว่า แต่เวลาทำงานมักจะใช้ digital

ก็ใช้ wacom intuos 2 6×8 กับ photoshop บางทีก็ painter

ถ้ามีเวลาก็อยากลองสีหรืออุปกรณ์อื่นๆ

RF: What was the most challenging aspect of being an artist?

How did you overcome it?

M: The most challenging is

1.’How can we survive by doing thing we love?’.
Art field isn’t like other field. You really need passion and drive to go on.
I have to say because this field has a lot of competition, that why we have to develop ourself or we’ll be out of date.

2.’How can we surpass yourself and develop?’

…person who really hard to beat is yourself ….

3.’When it’s lack of inspiration and aspiration

it’s make us want to stop sometimes’

That’s why being artist it’s need to stick to our dream …

4.’How we can move further than our inspiration people?’
When we have someone we really admire,
surely they’ll have influence to us,
how can we step up and create our own unique style.

5.’How can we manage about our style and what client and market want?’
That’s artist problem
…My advice is ‘be yourself’ because at last thing people want to see is ‘your identity’…

เรดฟริกชัน:อะไรคือส่วนที่ท้าทาย ในการเป็นอาร์ติสท์ แล้วคุณก้าวข้ามมันได้ยังไง?

มุ่ย:ส่วนที่ท้าทายคือ

1. เราจะอยู่ได้โดยการทำสิ่งที่เรารักได้ยังไง?

งานด้านศิลปะ ไม่เหมือนงานด้านอื่นๆ เพราะมันต้องการแรงขับและใจรักที่จะไปต่อ

นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นงานด้านที่มีการแข่งขันสูง จึงต้องพัฒนาตัวเองตลอดเวลา

2.เราจะชนะตัวเองและพัฒนาขึ้นได้ยังไง?

3.เวลาที่ขาดแรงบันดาลใจหรือว่าแรงขับ บางเวลาทำให้เราอยากหยุด..

เพราะฉะนั้นสิ่งที่สำคัญคือ ต้องเชื่อมั่นในฝันตัวเอง

4.เราจะไปไกลกว่าคนที่เป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้เราได้อย่างไร?

ก็คือการพัฒนางานที่มีความเป็นตัวของตัวเองขึ้นมา

5.เราจะจัดการกับสไตล์ของตัวเองกับสิ่งที่ตลาดต้องการ

และลูกค้าต้องการได้อย่างไร?

ถ้าให้เราแนะนำคือ “เป็นตัวของตัวเอง” ดีที่สุด เพราะสุดท้ายแล้ว

สิ่งที่ใครๆอยากได้หรืออยากเห็นคือ “ความเป็นตัวเรา”

ถ้าเราทำสิ่งที่เหมือนๆกันกับคนอื่น เราอาจจะมีค่าแค่เรียกให้ใช้งาน

แต่ถ้าเราเป็นคนเดียวที่ทำในสิ่งที่เราทำได้ เราจะมีคุณค่ามากกว่า

RF: What do you do for fun, beside creating art?

M: Play game of course!! And reading book…I love book that have inspiration quote and some philosophy….sometimes going to travel to open our eyes.

เรดฟริกชัน:ทำอะไรเพื่อผ่อนคลาย นอกจากการทำงาน?

มุ่ย:เล่นเกม อ่านหนังสือ ชอบหนังสือเชิงปรัชญาที่มีคำคม

แล้วก็ออกไปเที่ยว เปิดหูเปิดตา

RF: Can you describe to us the process and inspiration goes into developing a piece?

M: Firstly we need to expand our sight and visions by see a lot of things, not just art, but also ‘everything’ around us then it will inspire us or have subject. When you drawing pic you’ll have subject to communicate to viewer or you’ve something to say to them by use an image. [I believe one image have meaning more than million word.] When we have concept then next step is create piece by thinking about mood/tone/atmosphere and last step is execution.

เรดฟริกชัน: ช่วยอธิบายขั้นตอนในการทำงานและแรงบันดาลใจในการสร้างงานได้ไหม?

มุ่ย:อย่างแรกคือเราต้องเปิดโลกทัศน์ตัวเองด้วยการดูอะไรหลายๆอย่าง ไม่ใช่แค่อะไรที่เกี่ยวกับศิลปะ

แต่ว่าดูทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างรอบๆตัีวเรา จะเกิดแรงบันดาลใจและเราจะมีสิ่งที่ต้องการสื่อสาร

เวลาเราวาดรูปขึ้นมา เราจะมีสิ่งที่ต้องการสื่อสารกับคนดู โดยผ่านทางภาพ

เราเชื่อว่าภาพ 1 ภาพมีความหมายมากกว่าคำ 1 ล้านคำ

(แต่บางครั้งภาพ 1 ภาพ ก็ไม่สามารถแทนคำ 1 คำ)

เมื่อเรามีแนวคิดแล้ว ขั้นต่อไปคือการสร้างงานโดยการคิดถึงองค์ประกอบและอารมณ์โดยรวม

จากนั้นก็ทำให้เสร็จ เป็นขั้นตอนสุดท้าย

RF: Are you a freelance artist, represented artist by a creative agency/firm/group?

M: Yes, I’m freelance artist now

เรดฟริกชัน: ตอนนี้ทำงานอิสระอยู่หรือเปล่า ทำงานให้กับองค์กร หน่วยงาน สตูดิโอไหนหรือเปล่า?

มุ่ย:ตอนนี้เป็นนักวาดอิสระค่ะ

RF: Give us some tips on how to market successfully as an artist?

M: Actually I’m not successful in term of artist yet, because I’ve set my goal, when I’m not accomplish most goal I’ve set I can’t completely said I’m successful artist, but I keep going on my way now:), and it’s going quite well. If you asking about how to market yourself?

I think you need to submit art to online community or place that you can share pic to other people that can receive critique so you can develop your pic. Then start making our own portfolio, send them to publisher, There are so many way to marketing yourself but keep your art be seen by a lot of people, I think it’s really necessary to learn about it so we can survive in this industry.

เรดฟริกชัน: ช่วยให้คำแนะนำเกี่ยวกับการประชาสัมพันธ์ตัวเองให้ประสบความสำเร็จ

มุ่ย: จริงๆแล้วเรายังไม่ประสบความสำเร็จในแง่ของการเป็นอาร์ติสท์หรือในแง่ของงาน
เพราะว่าเรามีเป้าหมาย เมื่อเรายังไม่บรรลุในเป้าหมายหลายๆอย่าง เราจึงไม่สามารถพูดได้เต็มปาก
ว่า”ประสบความสำเร็จ” แต่เราก็มีแนวทางของเรา และก็ไปได้ค่อนข้างดี
ถ้าหากถามเราว่า จะประชาสัมพันธ์ตัวเองยังไง
ขั้นแรกสุดต้องทำงานออกไปสู่สาธารณะชนก่อน คือพวก community online ที่เราสามารถแชร์รูป
และรับคำติชมได้ เพราะเราจะได้พัฒนาผลงานตัวเอง จากคำติชมเหล่านั้น
พอพัฒนาผลงานได้ระดับที่ทำงานจริงได้แล้ว ก็ทำพอร์ทรวบรวมผลงาน
แล้วก็ส่งไปยังสำนักพิมพ์หรือที่ต่างๆเพื่อให้ได้งานมาทำ
หรือบางทีสำนักพิมพ์หรือบริษัทต่างๆ เห็นงานหรือพอร์ทเรา ก็จะติดต่อมาเองก็มี
ก็คือทำยังไงก็ได้ให้งานของเราถูกเห็นโดยคนหมู่มากเข้าไว้
เราคิดว่าทุกคนควรเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับการประชาสัมพันธ์งานตัวเอง
เพราะมันเกี่ยวข้องกับการอยู่รอดในวงการนี้

RF: What was the recent commission/paid project you had? What did you learn from it?

M: It’s commission for Thai publishing, what I’ve learn from it it…sometimes style market want and style we want to draw, it’s sometimes go in different way when we ‘re in commercial art it’s really hard to be 100% yourself, I’ve try to keep my own identity and learn to adapt myself to any assign project, and wish I can survive by doing my own style in future:)

เรดฟริกชัน:โปรเจคล่าสุดที่ได้รับค่าตอบแทน และเรียนรู้อะไรจากงานนั้น?

มุ่ย:เป็นงานจ้างจากสำนักพิมพ์ในไทย ถ้าถามว่าได้เรียนรู้อะไร คือบางทีสไตล์ที่ตลาดต้องการ
กับสไตล์ที่เราอยากทำจริงๆ มันสวนทางกัน หรือไปคนละทาง เวลาเราทำงานคอมเมอร์เชียลอาร์ท
หรือศิลปะเพื่อการค้า บางทีมันยากที่จะได้เป็นตัวของตัวเอง 100%
ก็คือต้องรักษาความเป็นตัวของตัวเองเอาไว้ และเรียนรู้ที่จะปรับตัวให้เข้ากับงาน
และหวังว่าในอนาคตจะอยู่รอดได้โดยการทำแต่สไตล์ของตัวเอง

RF: What is your ultimate goal as an artist?

M: Doing what we want and can sell, publish our art or product all over the world travel around to exhibit our own art.:) I think it’s ultimate goal of every artist. Everyone want to survive only do own art not just doing hard work by satisfy other people ….but that’s hard and can’t doing in short period, as I said we need to stick to our goal, that’s all.

เรดฟริกชัน: อะไรคือเป้าสูงสุดในการเป็นอาร์ติสท์?
มุ่ย: ทำในสิ่งที่อยากทำ และสามารถขายได้ ตีพิมพ์หรือออกผลงานของตัวเองไปทั่วโลก
และได้ออกแสดงผลงานของตัวเอง เราเชื่อว่าทุกคนอยากทำงานของตัวเอง
ไม่ใช่แค่การทำงานหนักเพือทำให้ผู้อื่นพอใจหรือทำงานเพื่อคนอื่น
แต่ว่ามันยาก และไม่สามารถทำได้ในช่วงเวลาสั้นๆ
ที่เราพูดได้อย่างเดียวคือยึดมั่นในเป้าหมายของตัวเอง มันก็มีแค่นั้นแหละ

RF: Can you describe the “formula” in being a successful artist,
and remaining to do so till the end of time?

M: Unfortunately, from my thought, there are no ‘formula’ of ‘being successful artist’
Our life have ‘no formula’ it isn’t like math or science that can describe,
being artist it isn’t like other occupation also,:)
but one thing I can said is being successful and unsuccessful,
there are only one different point,
’successful’ it’s mean you keep stick to your dream
no matter what happen to your life and no surrender. That’s all.
‘Unsuccessful’ it’s mean you stop in the way.
We don’t know we’ll successful or not if we didn’t keep moving on,
but I believe in physic rule[ I study when I'm in secondary]
ACTION=REACTION.
If you want to successful put ‘equal force’ to it, like alchemy rule in Full Metal Alchemist.

เรดฟริกชัน: ช่วยอธิบาย “วิธีการ”หรือ”สูตรสำเร็จ” ในการเป็นอาร์ติสท์ที่ประสบความสำเร็จ

มุ่ย:แย่หน่้อยนะ…เพราะจากความคิดเรา เรารู้สึกว่ามันไม่มีคำว่า “สูตรสำเร็จ”

ในการประสบความสำเร็จในด้านการทำงานศิลปะ

ที่จริงแล้วชีวิตของเรา ต่างก็ไม่มีสูตรสำเร็จ มันไม่เหมือนคณิตศาสตร์หรือวิทยาศาสตร์

ที่มีสูตรอยู่แล้วและสามารถอธิบายได้

และการทำงานศิลปะ ไม่เหมือนกับทำอาชีพอื่นๆด้วย

แต่สิ่งที่เราสามารถพูดได้คือ …ระหว่างคำว่า”ประสบความสำเร็จ”

กับไม่ประสบความสำเร็จนั้น…มีข้อแตกต่างอยู่เพียงข้อเดียว

คือ คนประสบความสำเร็จ ไม่ว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้นกับชีวิต ก็ไม่ล้มเลิกเป้าหมายกลางคัน

“ไม่ประสบความสำเร็จ” คือเราหยุดลงกลางทาง

เราเชื่อว่าโลกนี้ดำเนินไปด้วยกฏฟิสิกส์

แรงกิริยา=แรงปฎิกิริยา

อยากได้อะไร ก็ทุ่มเทแรงไปเท่านั้น

RF: What is your number one advice for young people wanting to become an artist?

M: If you can’t decide yourself that ‘you really want to success in this field’,
don’t step in the industry …If you being happy by doing art as hobby and have stable work, do it.
It’s unlike other occupation you really need patient,
and a lot of passion to go on, but one work is….’You’ll be happy,
if you know what you really want to do in life and go on’
People have our own way we can’t decide what’s happy for others people life,
so you just want to find answer yourself…’Do you really happy by drawing or doing art?’
If you sure for that, come on, and stick to the goal keep it up

เรดฟริกชัน: อะไรคือคำแนะนำอย่างแรกของคุณสำหรับคนที่ิคิดจะเป็นอาร์ติสท์?

มุ่ย:ถ้าหากคุณไม่สามารถตัดสินใจได้ว่าคุณอยากประสบความสำเร็จในด้านนี้จริงๆ

อย่าก้าวเข้ามาทำเต็มตัว ถ้าหากคุณมีความสุขในการทำงานศิลปะเป็นงานอดิเรก

และมีงานที่มั่นคง ทำมัน…เพราะมันไม่เหมือนอาชีพอื่นตรงที่คุณต้องการความอดทน

และแรงขับมหาศาลในการดำเนินชีวิตและทำงานต่อไป

แต่สิ่งหนึ่งคือ คุณจะมีความสุขกับงานที่ทำถ้าคุณรู้ว่าสิ่งที่คุณอยากทำในชีวิตจริงๆคืออะไร

และก้าวไปเพือสิ่งนั้น เพราะฉะนั้นคุณต้องค้นหาคำตอบกับคำถามนี้ด้วยตัวเอง

“คุณมีความสุขกับการได้วาดรูปหรือการทำงานศิลปะขนาดไหน?”

ถ้าหากคุณมีความมั่นใจว่ามันใช่ ก็ก้าวเข้ามาทำ และยึดมั่นในเป้าหมายเข้าไว้
