ACLA: Bridge Between Tradition and Innovation in Asian Cultural Landscapes part 1
Sung-Kyun Kim played a pivotal role in "Seoul City Planning for the Next Century," also known as the "Seoul Planning Charter," spanning from 2012 until 2015. This ambitious initiative set the course for Seoul's urban planning over the next century, establishing a visionary charter that would steer the metropolis with longevity and coherence.
Embracing a century-long sustainable urban planning ethos, the Charter came to fruition through the collective effort of 170 Seoul citizen representatives. During the crucial theme selection phase, the expertise of 21 specialists, the insights of three Seoul Metropolitan Council members, and the contributions of six civic-minded individuals were harnessed. Among these experts lending his acumen to the process was Sung-Kyun Kim.
The comprehensive endeavor took off on August 16, 2012, and reached its culmination on September 10, 2015, with a declaration and subsequent actions to implement the charter's long-term vision.
Throughout the aforementioned period, Professor Kim often engaged in insightful dialogues with his student, Hyun-Jin Chun. Their camaraderie deepened through shared interests in environmental sustainability, enhancing quality of life, and the nuances of Korean culture—recognized as a vital thread in the fabric of Asia.
In the subsequent year, the 2nd ACLA International Symposium unfolded from October 12 to 14, 2013, in Seoul, Korea, under the banner "Meanings & Aesthetics in Asian Cultural Landscape". During this gathering, Sung-Kyun Kim shed light on the topic with his presentation, "Meaning and Aesthetics of a Korean Traditional Landscape: Focusing on Hahoe Gyeomam-Okyeonjeong" – a contemplation of Nujeongwon within Hahoe village. The scholarly exchange was immortalized in the Symposium Proceedings, spanning pages 39-46.
In the crisp autumn of 2014, Seoul, Korea, became a convergence point for minds intrigued by cultural topographies, hosting the 3rd ACLA International Symposium. This iteration explored the theme of "Waterfront Asian Cultural Landscape." In the midst of this intellectual gathering, Kim-Sung-Kyun captivated attendees with his lecture "Way of Seeing in Traditional Korean Landscape Garden," offering a deep dive into the nuanced world of Nujeongwon.
The 4th ACLA International Symposium took place in the picturesque setting of Bali from September 11 to 13, 2015. Centered on the theme "Agricultural Landscapes of Asia: Learning, Preserving, and Redefining," the event was masterfully orchestrated by the Landscape Architecture Department of Udayana University, steered by the dedicated Naniek Kohdrata.
In November 2015, Sung-Kyun Kim, the esteemed professor from Seoul National University and Chairman of the Korean Society of Landscape Architecture, showcased his solo exhibition of design and photography at the Museum of Art in Yanbian University, China. This exhibition, running from the 16th to the 20th of November, was a result of an invitation from Yanbian University and featured around forty photographs of his notable designs, including the Deoksugung Pedestrian Road.
The exhibition drew a considerable audience, including prominent figures such as the International Relations Office head of Yanbian University, the Fine Arts College dean, and various local dignitaries like the city council vice-chairman and the directors of both the Yanji City Construction Bureau and the Design Institute.
In addition to the exhibition, Professor Kim contributed to Yanbian University's 'Invited Lecture by Foreign Scholars' series. There, he delivered an insightful lecture on 'Pedestrian-centered Street Landscape Design,' sharing his expertise with city officials and students of Yanji City.
In 2016, Sung-Kyun Kim was deeply involved in a series of initiatives to further the appreciation of Nujeongwon. His endeavors began with the launch of 'Winding River Village, Poetic of a Korean Landscape' by ACLA Press—the inaugural edition of a book stemming from his 1988 PhD dissertation. Kim further contributed to the academic dialogue through the publication of a scholarly paper titled "A Study on the Contents and Distribution of Palgyeong in Gangneung Area" by Korean Institute of Traditional Landscape Architecture, adding to the field with his co-authored research in volume 34, issue 2, on pages 16 to 26.
The year's tapestry of international exchanges was richly embroidered with the 5th ACLA International Symposium held in Lampang, Thailand, from December 2nd to 4th. The symposium, which revolved around the theme "Sacred Sites, Cultural Landscapes & Harmonizing the World of Asia", saw Kim present a compelling case for crafting sacred landscapes that embody the essence of pungsu and Nujeongwon—highlighted by Bongyudongcheon, a site of reverence in his native land. This gathering in Lampang marked the fifth international convocation under the ACLA banner.
The 6th ACLA Symposium unfurled its intellectual tapestry from July 22nd to 24th, 2017, against the urban backdrop of Vladivostok, Russia. Focusing on the engrossing theme of "Urban Cultural Landscape and Urban Regeneration," this event marked the sixth international discourse under the ACLA aegis. At the helm of organizing this vibrant symposium was Alessio Russo, then a professor of Landscape Architecture at the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), weaving together a meeting of minds and ideas.
In August 2017, Professor Sung-Kyun Kim embarked on an ACLA-driven lecture tour across Indonesia, gracing six universities and one community forum with his expertise. Fast forward to November 17th and 18th of the same year, Sung-Kyun Kim, alongside his team, orchestrated an ACLA-APELA workshop at Seoul National University, Korea. This workshop, themed "Cultural Landscape as National Identity: Illustrating Asia" (Part 1), represents the 7th (A) in the series of ACLA's international gatherings.
In the balmy climes of Bali during 2018, Professor Sung-Kyun Kim interspersed his leisure with intellectual pursuits, visiting traditional villages and imparting wisdom at Warmadewa and STIBA Saraswati Universities. His lectures were poignantly titled "Sustainable Village" and "Poetics of a Korean Landscape," infusing the essence of Nujeongwon into ACLA's heart.
As autumn painted the year's twilight, from October 23rd to 26th, the storied city of Ayodhya in India set the stage for ACLA's seventh symposium. This gathering, draped in the theme "Pilgrimage Cities & Cultural Landscapes of Asia and Prospects for Sustainable Tourism," added another rich layer as the 8th international ACLA event.

Sung-Kyun Kim and his team hosted an engaging ACLA-IFLA CLC workshop at Seoul National University, Korea, on the 18th and 19th of February, 2019. Delving into "Cultural Landscape as National Identity: Illustrating Asia" (Part 2), the event was a blend of discourse and discovery. This was complemented by a series of visits to quintessential locations in Kim's hometown of Mungyeong-si, enriching the narrative of place and identity. This two-day event stands as the 7th (B) ACLA International gathering, weaving another thread into the rich tapestry of cultural landscape dialogues.
Continuing through 2019, specifically on the 9th and 10th of October, he served as the keynote speaker at the ACLA Conference held in Johor, Malaysia. The event, themed "Perception and Aesthetics of Cultural Landscape in Asia," afforded him another opportunity to delve into the subject of Nujeongwon. This conference marks the 9th in the series of ACLA's international events. At that time, Professor Sung-Kyun Kim and Associate Professor Chun Hyun-Jin were engaged in conversations about organizing the forthcoming ACLA event in Nanjing, China, slated for mid-2020. However, the unfolding pandemic necessitated a postponement of the event by a year.
In the same year, on 17~19 October 2019, Prof. Sung-Kyun Kim attended the ACLA Symposium, with the theme “Interfacing Environment, Law, Sustainability & Cultural Landscapes of Asia”. It was organized by Sarvesh Amigo, Gorakhpur University, and was held in Gorakhpur, India. This Symposium as the 10th ACLA International event in sequence.
