ACLA: A Platform for the Asian Cultural Landscape Dialogue
Before formally establishing ACLA, Professor Sung-Kyun Kim and his team were behind several international events. Chun Hyun-Jin played an active role in these initiatives. Through deep reflection, Professor Kim realized the necessity for a distinctly Asian dialogue on regional issues to build a unique identity and shape our future with an Asian-focused cultural landscape. This led to his articulation of “Nujeongwon” as follows:
Nujeongwon refers to a unified exterior space, visually and conceptually, anchored by the Nujeong structure. This fresh interpretation steers away from Western notions of a garden—conceived as an artificial, enclosed plot adorned for beauty and function—and casts a new light on the Korean landscape.
Professor Kim boldly brought “Nujeongwon” to the forefront in three global scientific gatherings in 2010 and 2011:
He introduced the concept at the IFLA APR Cultural Landscape Committee meeting in Seoul, Korea, from December 14-17, 2010. His paper was aptly titled "Sustainable Korean Landscape Garden, 'Nujeongwon'", with his findings published in the symposium's proceedings on pages 18-23.
As an honored guest at the Landscape Architecture Congress in Tallinn, Estonia, from November 2-4, 2011, he shared his insights in a presentation named “Sustainable Landscape and Aesthetics in Korean Traditional Landscape Parks, Nujeongwon” as part of the EFLA Regional Congress of Landscape Architecture centered around the theme "Mind the Gap: Landscapes for a New Era."
Professor Kim revisited the subject once more at the IFLA APR Cultural Landscape Committee meeting in Seoul, Korea, from December 5-8, 2011. His paper, "Sustainable Korean Traditional Landscape Garden, 'Nujeongwon'", added depth to the discussion, with the proceedings documented on pages 31-40 of the symposium's records.
