The Inception of ACLA

The Asian Cultural Landscape Association (ACLA) is passionately dedicated to more than just the preservation of nature, culture, and our richly woven cultural landscapes; it's also at the forefront of nurturing and crafting ecological, cultural, and historical sites that will inspire and educate future generations. This commitment involves a mindful balance between safeguarding our cherished traditions and thoughtfully establishing new sites where history, culture, and nature can converge in harmony—a legacy that blends stewardship with innovation.

Sung-Kyun Kim's doctoral thesis, "Winding River Village: Poetics of a Korean Landscape," never explicitly mentions 'Nujeongwon', yet its essence pervades the text. A close examination, particularly of the sixth chapter titled "THE SIXTEEN BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES," reveals 'Nujeongwon' at the heart of the discussion. Kim's exploration into this theme isn't new—it has been a subject of his rigorous inquiry ever since his M.A. studies at the University of Pennsylvania from 1984 to 1987.

The first time 'Nujeongwon' came under the spotlight as the central ethos of ACLA was in an event spearheaded by the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture.
Here, at a conference on “The Universality and Regionality of Landscape Culture in the East Asian Region” held in Tokyo in August 2006, Professor Kim unveiled his research in a paper and presentation titled "Structure and Meaning of a Korean Nujeongwon".

Years of dedication and sleep-deprived nights—averaging just 3 to 4 hours of rest—culminated in 2009 when Kim had to endure brain surgery. During this precarious time, submerged in the liminal space of suspended animation, the seeds for organizing the spirit of Asian cultural landscapes were sown, materializing just hours before he reemerged into consciousness.

Post-recovery, and having navigated through his life-threatening ordeal, Kim found himself contemplating even more profoundly on what constitutes the identity of Asian, and more specifically, Korean landscapes.

As for the emblem of ACLA, it embodies the platform as Asia's hub for egalitarian discourse on the region's cultural landscapes. It's also layered with meaning: the 'A' represents both the beginning and the cyclical return, the continuous loop of 'C' mirrors the principle of perpetuity, and the trailing 'L' stands for the dynamic propulsion towards longevity. This symbol neatly encapsulates the foundational goals and aspirations of the institution.
