Too much work isn't good – it can kill your passion little by little until, in the end, you no longer enjoy drawing. Then it becomes just drawing for money.
And in the end, drawing just for money has no downfalls unless you have grand ideals and want to make a living out of drawing. But let's be clear – with this mindset, you'll never reach the peak of the pyramid. Why? Because you lack spirit...
You have to ask yourself what makes you wake up every day and practice drawing? Isn't that passion? What happens when that passion is killed by the pursuit of money is that you no longer have passion and drawing isn't fun for you anymore. How can you compete with those who wake up every day with the goal of practicing their art, thinking about how to make a living from it, or how to monetize their work and increase the value of their craft?
So, we try to continuously share our thoughts that are beneficial. First off, making money is not wrong, and it's necessary for life. And some people aren't in a position to consider much more than having enough to eat each day – in which case any job will do as a means of income.
But if you want to be at the top of your field, and be part of the group that's most different and earns the most, selling the highest-priced work, you need to consider two things:
Types of works – being at the top of your field. There are 3 types of works you could do:Low hanging fruit (bread and butter) – easy jobs that are quick to finish and pay the bills.
High profile (portfolio building) – these enhance creativity and provide a strong portfolio, even if the payout isn't high.
Pigeon hole (Bonzai) – jobs that pay well and offer stability but little room for growth and can pigeonhole your image.
Strategies for survival while being able to both paint and earn well. Your strategy will depend on your lifestyle and preferences. Our method involves not making drawing our main job because our way is to draw only in our style, without adjusting to market demands. So we teach as our main job, then price our drawings in a way that shifts our pricing paradigm over time.
